Tarrin is a dedicated powerlifting athlete and coach with over six years of experience in the sport, including more than four years of competitive experience. As an athlete, he has competed at every level, from regional to international, including representing the English Commonwealth Powerlifting Team in New Zealand in 2022. Most recently, he competed at the British University Championships, achieving a total of 715kg with a 260kg squat, 165kg bench press, and 290kg deadlift.
Tarrin began coaching athletes during his time at university, quickly realising his aptitude for teaching and enjoyment of the problem-solving and systematic aspects of powerlifting programming. He has successfully coached multiple clients to podium finishes at both national and international levels. Recognising that coaching was his true calling, Tarrin decided to pursue powerlifting and nutrition coaching full-time with the company PerforMotion, despite having completed a Master's degree in Civil Engineering.
Tarrin is a strong advocate for responsible supplement use, particularly given that IPF powerlifting is a drug-tested and WADA-compliant sport. If he were to narrow it down to three key supplements that provide the best value for his clients, they would be the following:
Pre-Workout: Powerlifting is a physically and mentally demanding sport. To maximise the benefits of training sessions, many athletes will find they can push themselves harder with the use of some type of pre-workout. A personal favourite of Tarrin's is DEFIB by HR LABS. As a larger individual, he appreciates the higher doses of caffeine and other active ingredients. For those who train in the evenings or are more sensitive to caffeine, he recommends VASCUMAX PRO by STROM, as this product promotes improved blood flow and better muscle contraction during training without the stimulants that could otherwise affect sleep and recovery if taken too late in the day.
Intra-Workout Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are the key fuel used by the body during strength training due to its anaerobic nature and high intensity. The body has only a limited amount of carbohydrate storage available, so for longer sessions, it can be highly beneficial to supplement with carbohydrates to sustain the energy required to complete a session with adequate intensity. After trying a variety of intra-workout carbohydrate supplements, Tarrin's preferred choice is CARBUP by HR LABS, due to its easy digestion and more stable release of energy compared to some cheaper short-chain carbohydrates.
Creatine: There is a wealth of research supporting the benefits of creatine supplementation for strength training. These include increased muscle mass, which enhances the strength potential of a muscle, and improved ATP replenishment. ATP is the main energy carrier in the body and is utilised heavily during high-intensity exercises such as powerlifting. Tarrin's go-to source of creatine is BASIC by HR LABS, as it combines creatine with hydration products and adaptogens, making it a convenient all-in-one option for the morning. For those seeking a single-ingredient creatine product, he recommends CreaMAX by STROM.
